Sesriem and the Tsauchab
The doorway to the big red dunes, and a little canyon most people walk straight past.
Sesriem is where the road to Sossusvlei starts: the dunes, Deadvlei and the dead trees you've seen on every screensaver. They're even better in person. But the bit I liked most was the Sesriem Canyon itself, a narrow slot the Tsauchab River cut into the gravel, cool and quiet while everyone else queues for Dune 45.
On the 2017 Epupa trip we got there tired and late and nearly skipped it. Glad we didn't.

Good to know
- Stay inside the park gate if you want to be on the dunes at sunrise. It's worth the price.
- The last 5 km to Sossusvlei is deep sand. Take the shuttle unless you have a 4x4 and know what you're doing.
- Fuel at Sesriem and Solitaire. Solitaire also has the apple pie everyone talks about. It's fine.
